We’re off to Wilsons Prom

On Friday 28 March we left Port Phillip Bay to make our way to Wilsons Promontory. This was just over four months after arriving at our berth in the Yarra River.

We plan to anchor around Wilsons Prom and wait out some forecasted bad weather, before heading to Lakes Entrance.

Relive our trip

Trip summary

Portsea to Cleeland Bight

  • Left Friday 28 March
  • Distance of 48NM taking nearly 7 hours
  • Pretty average, rolly conditions as we headed in a south-easterly direction past Cape Schanck
  • No photos taken and unhappy cats!

Cleeland Bight to Waterloo Bay

  • Left Saturday 29 March
  • Distance of 70NM taking over 9.5 hours (a long day for us)
  • Conditions OK, and improved once we rounded the south-west point of Wilsons Prom
  • Tucked in safely near Keijsers Beach for four nights

Waterloo Bay to Refuge Cove

  • Left Wednesday 2 April
  • Distance of 8NM taking about 1.5 hours (initially expected to be distance of 4NM taking 30 mins)
  • We took a big tack for this trip, to face into the waves rather than have them beam on
  • Tucked in safely to wait out another big blow
  • During the windiest time, we captured gusts of 107km/hour (57knots), the highest we’ve experienced. We felt the boat tilt a bit during this.
  • Spent six nights here
  • On our last day, a group of kayakers arrived. They’d paddled from Port Welshpool and were planning to island hop to Tasmania. I wonder how their trip went, and how they carried provisions for this. Perhaps they had a ‘mothership’?

Refuge Cove to Corner Inlet

  • Left Thursday 8 April
  • Distance of 23NM taking nearly 4 hours
  • Spent two nights here
  • A strong current against us as we went through the channel between Snake Island and Three Mile Beach
  • This was our first time in this area, so we took the opportunity to explore in our tender
  • Thought we might have to row back to Poseidon after noticing we were getting very short of power (probably because I was driving too fast!)

Photos and videos taken during our trip

The tall cliffs and rock formations around Wilsons Prom are spectacular and I always take hundreds of photos. I also took some videos to try and highlight the area and weather conditions. You can hike around some areas of Wilsons Prom and I’m sure the views from the land are amazing, but equally are the views from the water.

Oops, there’s a glitch in the video around 1.33 but resolves at 1.38. If you can’t hear over the wind, you might want to view CC. (And these are two reasons I don’t do VLOGs!)

I took these photos when we were exploring Corner Inlet.

Where to next?

We’ll be heading to Lakes Entrance and exploring the Gippsland Lakes.

  1. Great story as always. Windy days don’t sound like much fun though! Especially if you’re a cat!
