Cruising Lake Macquarie

It’s been nearly three years since we were last in Lake Macquarie and back then we were very inexperienced cruisers. In fact, on our first night in the lake we managed to get some of the mooring rope tangled around our prop and Robert had to jump in and luckily managed to free it! You can read about it here.

Now as we head south, we have taken the opportunity to see cruise of the lake because we really didn’t do the area justice the last time.

Take a short tour of Lake Macquarie

This 2-minute video takes you on a short tour of the lake!

* Previously I was using STUNEO to create these vides but it’s no longer on the market, so I’m now using RELIVE.

  • Entry into the lake is now via a channel known as the “Airforce channel” and it’s quite shallow. Hopefully this will be dredged soon as there are a number of yachts unable to leave the lake because of their draft and I imagine also yachts who’d love to come in and can’t. We came through the channel on a high tide and the least we saw under our  keel was 0.7m.
  • There are plenty of facilities around the lake, including easy access to shops and restaurants, public docks where you can top up water, and pump out stations.
  • A hailstorm hit the region on the first afternoon we anchored in the lake, luckily missing us but we experienced thunder, lightening and quite heavy rain for a brief period of time.
  • Our friends on their Ocean Alexander, Sealeaf, have also been in the lake so we’ve caught up with them a few times while here. It’s rare for us to see another Ocean Alexander, so it’s always exciting for me! They’ve also circumnavigated Australia so very experienced cruisers.

I took a lot of photos when we were in Lake Macquarie previously and you might want to look at my Lake Macquarie Pictorial. And here are some current photos.

Where to next?

We will continue to head south and our next stop will be Broken Bay and surrounding areas including Pittwater, Hawkesbury, Gosford, Wisemans Ferry and Berowra Waters.

  1. I love the photo of Robert in relaxation mode, and also the sphinx-like cats looking very regal indeed!

  2. P.S. Sunset pictures are fabulous. And the cats … they are just beautiful!

  3. Hi Pam & Robert,
You certainly have ventured everywhere in Lake Macquarie.
    It’s a lovely area.

  4. Hi Pam xx I loved looking at your photos! As I told you our family have a holiday home at Nords Wharf and Steve grew up sailing and water-skiing all over the lake…it’s been a very big part of our lives despite having lived in Holland for 30 years. In fact, we based ourselves out of the ‘lake house’ each time we returned. Initially we did all the travelling when we returned to Australia but it’s exhausting!!

  5. Entertaining as always, Pam . Seen any sharks?
I heard there were a lot if Bull sharks there.

  6. Hi Pam & Robert Lake Macquarie looks awesome . Glad you had a good time and look forward to following your travels south. Safe travels, thinking of you both . Love Gerry & Sonja x
