Cruising around Broken Bay

We spent nearly three weeks cruising around the Broken Bay region. While we had Poseidon in a berth here for nearly seven years before we went north in 2020, there were still some areas of the region we hadn’t been to. So this was our focus. We had a great time, and were also very lucky to borrow a friend’s car for a week while she was away.

Here’s a 2-minute video of our trip, which shows us arriving at Broken Bay and takes us up to Wisemans Ferry. * America Bay, not America’s Bay!

Refuge and America Bay

These two bays are very popular playgrounds so we were very surprised when we had both bays to ourselves! Mind you it was mid-week during winter, so maybe those faint-hearted cruisers don’t choose to go out! Both bays provide shelter and have a number of public moorings that you can pick up for 24 hours.

Refuge Bay has an interesting history. In 1943 it was the training base for Z Force, which was preparing for a daring raid on Japanese shipping in Singapore Harbour, using MV Krait. It was considered the most daring and successful seaborne raid in military history.

Brooklyn

There’s a good anchorage area just off Brooklyn and near Dangar Island. There’s a convenience store nearby as well as a public dock where you can get water.

Mooney Mooney

We spent a bit of time here on anchor because we borrowed a friend’s car for a week. It does get very shallow so you need to take care coming in, and we navigated a route east of Spectacle Island.

Pinta Bay

This is a sheltered bay, about half way along Jerusalem Bay, and has a few public moorings.

Wisemans Ferry

You can cruise up the Hawkesbury River a long way beyond Wisemans Ferry, but we chose to stop here on another public mooring. We enjoyed a few nights at Wisemans Ferry and lunch at the local pub!

Pittwater and The Basin

In early July, we left the Hawkesbury River and headed into Pittwater, where we’d booked three nights at the Royal Motor Yacht Club. Here we could attend a couple of appointments, provision, get fuel and meet up with a friend for dinner.

We motored around the area just to check it out, it was very busy with so many boats. There were a number of bays with few public moorings, but they always seemed to be in use, and we don’t like taking private moorings, even if they are not being used at the time. But luckily, we got a public mooring at The Basin and I enjoyed kayaking around the area.

Where to next?

We’ll be heading to Sydney Harbour for about six weeks.

  1. I am still amazed at what you have achieved and where you have “motored” and the many bays and inlets you have explored. Looking forward to the next instalments.

  2. Such great adventures. As I’m laid up at the moment with limited movement on my knee i so enjoyed this blog. I won’t be buying a boat but I’ll be out there more , doing more , and no more potato couch.

  3. Did we go to America Bay one time when I was staying with you in Sydney??? Very interesting history about the Krait.
