Dunalley to Wineglass Bay

After a very windy day in Dunalley on 19 October, we awoke to perfect conditions and so it was time to move on!

This short video shows our route from Dunalley to Wineglass Bay and gives you a glimpse of the thick fog we experienced along the way.

Dunalley to Darlington

Dunalley to Darlington is about 23 NM and involved crossing the bar at Marion Narrows. I checked the forecast and also took a look at Marion Bar via the safety camera. Conditions were good so we released the mooring and made our way through the channel, ensuring we arrived at the bar crossing about an hour before high tide.

We then headed up the inside of Maria Island to pick up a public mooring at the northern end in Darlington. You might be interested in some of the history at both of these websites: Darlington and Maria Island History

Here are some photos of our trip from Dunalley to Darlington.

Darlington to Wineglass Bay

Darlington to Wineglass Bay is about 34 NM. During this leg, we experienced thick fog so we switched on our navigation lights and radar. We also set up the VHF radio to sound the horn for 5 seconds, every 2 minutes (you can hear this in the Relive video above).

Staying in Wineglass Bay

Wineglass Bay remains as spectacular as the last time we visited, when we both had Covid. At that time we enjoyed an easy walk across to Hazards Beach, but we never walked to the lookout. This time I was determined to do this.

This video shows quite significant waves breaking on the beach at Wineglass Bay. In the first five seconds, you can spot Poseidon anchored in the southern end of the bay, tucked in to help reduce any roll. And because of the waves breaking on the each, we took the tender to shore at the far southern end near Indigo Creek.

This proved to be a good option both for getting out and then getting back into the tender.

When walking to the lookout, I realised my aerobic fitness was not what it used to be!

Where to next?

We’ll be heading to St Helens for about a week so we can get fuel, top up our provisions, and enjoy a meal or two out.

  1. We loved our hike on Maria Island. So much convict history.
Trekking to the lookout over Wineglass Bay in 40 degree dry heat and kids in tow was a bit of a challenge. We came from the other side and that was steep as well. Great views though.

  2. Oh, I wish we were doing what you are! (We might however require a captain to navigate our boat).
Continue to enjoy and stay safe.
