After our short stay at Port Huon Marina, it was time head to Dunalley, through Denison Canal. We’d previously been through the canal after leaving Triabunna on our way to Hobart and I provided details in my blog Two cat nights in Hobart!
Since conditions in the Huon River had calmed from the gusts of +90km/hour we saw a week earlier, we started our trip to Dunalley. The short video below shows our route from Port Huon into Dunalley.
Key points during this trip
- While in Hobart, we received notification from Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST) that work was being done to replace the old fenders (bumpers) and walers (that fenders attach to) in the section of the canal under the bridge. This meant that the canal was only open for 30-minute periods at 8am, 12pm, 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Since going through the canal is best done on a slack high tide, we decided to transit the canal on the weekend because you could book bridge opening at a time that suited you.
- In hindsight, I should have booked the bridge opening for about 90 mins later than when I did, because we still had current behind us. This combined with strong winds meant we were passing under the bridge at 5 knots and that was without any engine power. This meant it was harder for Robert to steer the boat.
- The bridge operator (Chris) uses signals to indicate when to go, and also sent me a couple of photos as we passed through the narrowest section.
- During this trip we retuned and recalibrated our autopilot. We did this after having the rebuild of the rudder post supports and the correction of a longstanding fault in the rudder arm arrangement during the time we were maintaining our boat in Kettering.
- Due to strong winds, we thought we’d anchor in Boomer Bay (‘boomers in the bay’) rather than pick up the courtesy mooring, but we couldn’t get the anchor to hold due to excessive weed. So we moved onto the mooring which we picked up first time, despite strong winds blowing Poseidon around!
This is a slideshow of other photos I took as we made our way out of Port Huon marina and into Dunalley.
Where to next?
We’ll be crossing the bar at Marion Narrows and heading north to Wineglass Bay.

What an interesting collection of hand-knitted socks!
It was good to hear that you are now safely back across the Strait.
